  • 1913 - In one of the blackest days in U.S. history, the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. This amendment created the income tax.
  • 1953 - French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau publishes his most famous and lasting work, The Silent World.
  • 1959 - The Day the Music Died: A small plane carrying The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), Buddy Holly, and Richie Valens crashed near Mason City Iowa, while en route to a show in Fargo, North Dakota.
  • 1966 - the USSR accomplishes the first controlled landing on the moon, when the unmanned spacecraft Lunik 9 touches down on the Ocean of Storms.
